Chathamís High Street will be transformed as part of an exciting regeneration project after Medway Council was awarded £1.6m funding.

The local authority was given the money from a pot of £95m from Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zones scheme, which aims to find new ways to revive historic high streets.

The funding will be used to support heritage-led regeneration of a section of Chatham High Street, located within the Star Hill to Sun Pier Conservation Area.

Council leader, Councillor Alan Jarrett, said: “The funding will be used to create a Heritage Creative Quarter which will preserve the area’s history and tell its story.

“We are committed to ensuring that Medway’s high streets continue to thrive and this project will help further transform Chatham.”

Emily Gee, Historic England's regional director for London and the South East, said: “This is fantastic news for residents and businesses in this area of Chatham.

“Historic England is looking forward to working with the local community and stakeholders on this exciting project to help revitalise this historic high street."
