Public consultation for new innovation park

Wed 19 June 2019, 4:12 pm

A consultation on the future of a new innovation park in Medway has opened to the public to provide views on the latest development plans.

Innovation Park Medway is based at Rochester Airport and forms part of the North Kent Enterprise Zone, offering up to 100,000 sq m of commercial space.

The aim is for the business park to become a magnet for technology, engineering and manufacturing firms.

In early March, Medway Council’s cabinet approved a recommendation to consult on the Innovation Park Medway Local Development Order (LDO). This month Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council’s Planning and Transportation Advisory Board also approved consultation, as the business park crosses over into its area.

Both councils have been working on the LDOs, which set out the planning framework for the area, building on the Innovation Park Medway Masterplan that sets out the principles for the development.

LDOs are used to help attract investment into an area and support firms by providing clarity for potential occupants about the expected quality of the development.

Firms at Innovation Park Medway will benefit from modern meeting and conference spaces, business facilities and opportunities for networking by being part of the North Kent Enterprise Zone.

Innovation Park Medway will also offer a business rate discount to those who choose the site, with up to £55,000 annually for five years and a maximum of £275,000 per business.

Medway Council leader, Councillor Alan Jarrett, said: “We understand how important it is to help businesses grow, not only for them, but for Medway’s future and Innovation Park Medway will create a high quality, commercial innovation space for a broad range of technology, engineering, manufacturing and knowledge-intensive businesses.

“The site also offers attractive business rates and gives businesses the opportunity to grow alongside successful companies.

“Medway is the biggest regeneration zone within the Thames Gateway and it is one of the most promising growth areas in the south-east. Medway’s economy is worth £5.17bn and 14,000 businesses are based in the area. This is an incredibly exciting time for Medway.” The consultation ends on 19 July and businesses and residents can comment on the Innovation Park Medway LDO at: www.medway.gov.uk/ipm
