Rochester Riverside proposals on show

Plans for the £400 million Rochester Riverside regeneration scheme were showcased during a public exhibition on 6 September 2016.

Members of the public were asked to share their views on a set of proposals for the 21-ha site, which is expected to deliver almost 1,300 homes.

Countryside and The Hyde Group, selected as developers in March by Medway Council and the Homes and Communities Agency, presented their early ideas on the masterplan to an audience of 142 at Rochester Corn Exchange.

The first draft of the plans involves building 1,262 homes, ranging from detached riverside houses through to one-bedroom apartments which would be allocated as affordable. A new primary school would also be delivered, along with 10,033sq m of non-residential floorspace.

A new station square would form a gateway to the development; shops and cafes would be provided on Coy’s Wharf; a hotel, bar and restaurant on Crane Point.

The first set of proposals also features more than four hectares of open space, including parks and play areas, along with a 2.5km riverside path.

A store, a gym, a retail unit, offices, a pharmacy, a dentist, a health centre, a nursery, the primary school and a hotel, along with a restaurant or bar, would be part of phase one of the development.

Andy Fancy, operations director of Countryside’s Partnerships south division, told Medway1: “The exhibition was a great opportunity for us to engage with local residents and display our vision for Rochester Riverside.”

He said that the majority of people who completed a feedback form provided during the event agreed with the overall vision for the site, adding that the developers will now reflect on the feedback received.

“We will be coming back to the community later in the year to exhibit our more detailed plans when they are worked up,” he concluded.

David Gannicott, group director of business development at The Hyde Group, also spoke to Medway1, saying that the development and the group’s role within it will be “transformative” for Rochester residents.

He added that the feedback received had been “supportive, constructive and thoughtful”. “We will keep the local community updated as we move forward with our plans,” concluded Gannicott.

A second exhibition is planned for later in the year. A detailed plan should be submitted in early 2017.
