A University Technical College in Gillingham now has 400 registered students, one year after it opened.
Medway University Technical College (UTC) opened in September 2015 and took in 188 students aged between 14 and 19 during its first academic year. It has more than doubled the number this September.
Built as part of the £650 million Chatham Waters regeneration scheme at Chatham Docks, the £11.4 million facility offers GCSE and sixth form students practical training in construction, engineering and design.
Students also take traditional GCSE subjects, English, math and science, and are encouraged to take work experience placements at construction and engineering companies, several of which partner the institution.
Government-funded UTCs were set up in 2010 to offer an alternative to the traditional qualifications provided by secondary schools and sixth form colleges and address the perceived skill shortages in labour intensive industries.
