Conference tackles skills initiatives

Representatives from the public, private and voluntary sectors across Medway and North Kent met in Rochester in March to discuss employment and skills initiatives.
Medway Council's portfolio holder for strategic development and economic growth councillor Jane Chitty opened the Integrating Employment and Skills Initiatives conference.
Speaking before prime minister Gordon Brown announced the general election, councillor Chitty said: "Regeneration is a word often used to describe physical changes around us, but it’s much more than that." read more
Chatham milestone reached

Plans for further redevelopment in Chatham were given the go-ahead at the end of last month.
Medway Council cabinet members approved proposals for the redevelopment of the High Street and Best Street.
The area's masterplan places an emphasis on retail, with Chatham becoming the shopping centre of Medway, thanks to at least 30,000sq m of additional retail space. read more
General election 2010: Brown in Medway

Prime minister Gordon Brown made Medway the first stop of his election campaign after traveling on the high speed train fresh from calling on The Queen to dissolve parliament.

After confirming the election date of May 6, the prime minister met the public and massed media at the Strood Morrisons store.
A scrum of camera crews and photographers had been waiting since the visit was announced at around 9.30am. On a charm offensive to locals, with his wife Sarah, Brown had obviously prioritised Kent as an important front in his battle to beat Conservative leader David Cameron. read more
Medway bids for city status in 2012

Leading architects, designers, regeneration chiefs and local residents are all behind Medway’s new bid to secure city status.
More than 200 people showed their support at the Making of Medway launch event, held at the St George’s Centre, Chatham Maritime.
The towns have made two previously unsuccessful bids for city status, but confidence is high that now is Medway's time to shine. Talking ahead of the announcement of next month's general election the leader of Medway Council, councillor Rodney Chambers, said: "We believe that we have the strongest possible case." read more
