A new public plaza has opened at Medway’s major £419m regeneration scheme of Rochester Riverside, representing a major milestone in the development.
The 1,400-home project is being delivered by developers Countryside and Hyde, and the plaza that opened in October offers an 81-bed Travelodge hotel, Co-op store and new homes. The development is a stone’s throw from Rochester railway station and the town’s historic High Street.
The Co-op is the first retailer at Rochester Riverside and opened to the public in November. The first residents moved into their new homes in June last year, and construction continues across the first three phases of the development
Medway Council leader, Councillor Alan Jarrett, said: “Rochester Riverside is not only a valuable addition to Medway’s housing, providing residents with a greater choice of accommodation in an excellent location, but it is also a fine example of a local authority working closely with housing developers to produce a high-quality development.
“There is a huge demand for new properties in Medway and we are committed to ensuring Medway residents are provided with a great choice of affordable and luxury new homes.”
Rochester Riverside was previously a derelict brownfield site that will now provide 1,400 new homes, as well as a new primary school and retail space when complete in 2030. The development will also feature 10 acres of landscaped and green open space including play areas and parks, while the new 2.5km public riverside walkway will open up a key part of the riverside for the first time.
Andy Fancy, managing director of partnerships South (North and South) at Countryside, said: “The completion of these first homes, food store and the plaza at such a record rate is testament to the hard work of the team, who are committed to delivering much needed, high quality homes as quickly as possible."
Guy Slocombe, chief investment officer for Hyde, said: “It’s been great to see the first residents make Rochester Riverside their home and we look forward to welcoming more as future phases complete.”
