Medway Councilís highways maintenance team has won a prestigious award for its hard work within the community and for the environment.
The Medway team of VolkerHighways competed against more than 100 nominees to receive the International Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Excellence Award, from non-profit environmental group The Green Organisation.
The team has worked with Medway Council on highways maintenance since 2007 and supported a number of community initiatives since then.
These include sponsoring an under-10s football team and asking schoolchildren from the area to name a fleet of winter maintenance gritters.
Sohail Hussain, project manager for VolkerHighways, said: “The team here work very hard to maintain an active role in the local community and over the years we have had some great experiences, undertaking social value projects with the people of Medway.”
Other community initiatives include sponsoring the KM Charity Team’s Walk to School scheme and planting trees with the Academy of Woodlands.
Miles Durrant, environmental advisor for VolkerHighways, said: “Well done to the team who deserve this recognition for their innovative engagements with the community and setting an excellent example of the social value that can be achieved by highways maintenance contracts.”
Councillor Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s portfolio holder for frontline services, said: “We are pleased to have been working with VolkerHighways for a number of years on a variety of projects and we’re thrilled that their hard work has been recognised.”
The award will be presented to the VolkerHighways team at a ceremony in July at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in central London.
