The sortation centre will group together parcels received from Amazon's fulfilment centres before they are transported to delivery stations before being collected by drivers for final delivery.

Kevin Marsh, general manager for Amazon Sortation UK operations, said: "The sortation centre will have an important role in supporting the fast and reliable delivery Amazon customers love and trust. We would like to thank everyone in Medway and beyond for their support on this site."

With Amazon creating around 2,500 UK jobs in 2018 alone, the total number of employees across the country is expected to reach 27,500 by the end of the year.

Leader of Medway Council, Alan Jarrett, said: "Medway already has excellent transport and business links to London and the continent, making it a great place to do business.

"Medway is already home to more than 14,000 businesses and this move shows great confidence in all we have to offer businesses of all sizes looking to grow from strength to strength."
