A 1 million business space has opened in Strood, created from customized shipping containers. Designed to house entrepreneurs, start-up businesses and micro-firms, construction of the new premises started in February; Innovations Studio Strood opened on 7 September.

Comprising 15 office spaces and 18 storage units, the joint project between shipping container building specialist CargoTek and QED Sustainable Urban Developments was funded in part with £600,000 from the Coastal Communities Fund.

All the units have been leased, with a wide cross-section of businesses taking up residence, including a web design company, music label, fostering agency, print and design company and river transport provider.

Medway Council’s portfolio holder for planning, economic growth and regulation, councillor Jane Chitty said: “We are very excited to be officially launching the Innovation Studios Strood and I’m delighted that all of the pods have been snapped up.

“Medway is fast becoming an even more desirable place for businesses to set up and operate from, so it’s not surprising that these new units have been filled so quickly.”

Innovations Studio Strood is the second project in Medway Council’s growing ‘innovation business series’ of improvements, following the Innovation Centre Medway at Rochester Airport, which opened in 2008.
