Festival of Sport celebrates Rio 2016

by Marco Cillario Fri 3 June 2016, 10:57 am

A range of sporting events will take place in Medway this summer to celebrate the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

While Brazil is hosting the Games in August and September, Medway residents will have the opportunity to take part in ‘Rio taster sessions’ at Medway’s Festival of Sport.

Dozens of sports will be available to try, from archery to golf, and from cycling to water polo.

Medway is also hosting international sporting stars. Canada’s women’s sitting volleyball team took on Great Britain in a friendly competition on 28 and 29 May in preparation for Rio. The UK’s strongest men will be competing in the south-east qualifier on 18 June and an international judo tournament will be held on 25 and 26 June.

A Medway Big Ride will take place on 19 June at Medway Park, including a family bike ride, children’s races and other activities for cyclists.

On 22 July, the Medway Mile will give participants the opportunity to visit the historic sites of Rochester including the castle, take part in races and try out Olympic and Paralympic sports such as hockey and basketball.

Medway Tennis Festival week, from 24 to 30 July, will feature more than 100 tennis-related events, many of which are open to beginners.

Medway's sports centres will be holding an open day on 18 September, allowing people to practice activities such as aqua zorbing, lifesaving, fitness classes and scuba diving.

Cllr Howard Doe, portfolio holder for community services, said the council hoped to attract “thousands of people” to the area.

“The Festival of Sport is a fantastic opportunity for people to try Olympic and Paralympic sports. Medway has excellent sporting facilities.

“We have organised a number of events for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy. We have also invited athletes from across the world to join in our celebrations for Rio 2016, and residents have the opportunity to watch a number of professional events being held in Medway.”
