The University of Kent and the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust have opened a new lecture theatre and performance space in Medway.
Located in Chatham’s Royal Dockyard Church, the facility will be used by the university’s students, staff and the wider community. It was opened by the university’s vice-chancellor, Professor Dame Julia Goodfellow, on 22 October.
The church, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, has been converted for its new use with lighting, sound, projection and blackout features installed. Disabled access has been enabled partly by excavating the building’s vestry and under croft.
The space has also been re-decorated and minor modifications have been made to the building's exterior.
The university’s Medway campus was opened in 2005. Since then, it has worked with the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust to redevelop a number of buildings at the dockyard for educational use.
