Work to develop a centre to help Medway residents discover information about their family history has been given the go-ahead.

The Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre will move from the Civic Centre in Strood to the former Strood Library site in Bryant Road.

Strood Library was one of six locations considered for the project, and was chosen as it was the “most desirable and cost-effective location”.

The library has moved to Strood High Street, which is being refurbished and will incorporate an enlarged children’s zone.

Councillor Howard Doe, portfolio holder for community services, said: “People love researching their family tree and finding out about the history of where they live, and the new centre will help them do it in a welcoming location.

“The town will have two new superb facilities that will bring real benefit to the area.”
