Chatham milestone reached

Thu 8 April 2010, 12:32 pm

Plans for further redevelopment in Chatham were given the go-ahead at the end of last month.
Medway Council cabinet members approved proposals for the redevelopment of the High Street and Best Street.
The area's masterplan places an emphasis on retail, with Chatham becoming the shopping centre of Medway, thanks to at least 30,000sq m of additional retail space.

Proposals are in place for improving the connections between the Pentagon Centre and Chatham High Street, and also for the remodelling of major retail sites such as Debenhams, as well as for the creation of substantial new car parking facilities.

Speaking before the announcement of next month's general election, Medway Council's portfolio holder for strategic development and economic growth, councillor Jane Chitty, said: "By regenerating this area and focusing on the huge retail potential there is, we can in turn attract businesses and retailers, ultimately creating jobs and boosting our local economy.

"This masterplan provides an ambitious yet deliverable framework that can help Chatham become a regional centre for Medway.

"We are committed to ensuring everyone in Medway can truly benefit from the area's regeneration, and as we continue to buck the economic trend, this project highlights the need to be ambitious and invest in or future."

The public will be given the opportunity to provide feedback on the plans in June, ensuring their opinions are incorporated into the area's future.
