Education secretary Michael Gove has approved plans to create a free school on the site of The Oaks in Walderslade.
The Inspire Special Free School is expected to open in September 2014 with an initial intake of 40 pupils with emotional and behavioural problems.
Proposals for the new school were submitted by Medway Council and three borough headteachers.
Medway’s children’s services lead Councillor Mike O’Brien said the grouping had made a powerful case to Gove.
“This school will provide a high quality provision for statemented children with emotional and behavioural concerns,“ he said.
“A innovation feature of this proposal is that the Inspire school will work closely in partnership with Medway Council when generally free schools work independently of the local authority.
“The free school will give some of our most vulnerable children the best start in life.”
