Cash boost for borough cycling

by Jim Dunton Thu 25 April 2013, 12:25 pm

Medway Council is set to begin a £210,000 package of cycle-route improvements in Brompton following the agreement of a grant from the Department for Transport.

The work, expected to begin in the summer, will see new “Toucan” crossings installed in Wood Street and Dock Road, and a revamp of the existing cycle route that connects both streets via a roundabout.

Medway said the £105,000 government grant would be combined with Local Transport Plan funding and Section 106 contributions from local developments to pay for the work.

Front-line services lead Councillor Phil Filmer said the funding award would improve safety for both cyclists and pedestrians at what was a busy junction.

“I hope it will encourage more people to leave their cars at home and begin cycling around Medway,” he said.
