Housing association Golding Homes has been given the green light for a 40-home waterfront apartment block to be built at the rear of listed shops in Chatham High Street.
Medway Council approved the proposals for the five-storey block with undercroft parking at a meeting last week.
Nineteen of the one- and two-bedroomed flats will be for social rent, while the remainder will be for shared-equity sale.
The scheme, which is Golding’s first in the Medway borough area, will also create new public access to the river front by constructing a riverside walk.
In a statement to Medway planning officers the charity said that the scheme would improve the vitaliy and appearance of the Star Hill to Sun Pier Conservation Area as well as offering residents “spectacular views up and down the river”.
Golding Homes was formerly known as Maidstone Housing Trust and operates more than 6,500 homes in and around the county town.
