Walderslade Primary School has won a prestigious Kent design and development award for its £5 million new building.
The school, on Dargets Road, Walderslade, was one of eight buildings honoured during the annual awards, held at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre.
It beat competition from four other schools to win the “Public Buildings - Education” category.
Kasan Goh, director of project masterminds Clay Architecture, said the win had come as a surprise.
“The building had originally been short listed in the ‘Energy Performance’ category,” he said.
“However, when the judges made their site visit, they were so pleased with the building they decided to upgrade it to the tougher ‘Public Buildings - Education’ category.”
The project is the largest of the improvements being made to schools across Medway as part of the council’s ongoing school building programme.
