Medway Park, which is being created on the site of the former Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham, will be completed in February 2010.
Just two months later it will host the Modern Pentathlon World Cub - the first global sporting event to ever be staged in Medway, featuring a host of world and Olympic medallists.

The Medway Park project includes an eight-lane athletics track, the construction of one of the largest multi-sports halls in the region, a new 100-station health and fitness suite, a purpose-built gymnastics centre and a sports science and therapy centre run by the University of Kent. Other facilities are being upgraded and refurbished to provide the Medway community with a top-class sporting facility also capable of hosting major national and international events.

Medway Park has been approved as a 2012 training camp for 13 Olympic and eight Paralympic sports, making it the seventh-largest approved multi-sports centre in the country. The Paralympic Association of Barbados has already signed an agreement to bring its athletes to the centre, with additional teams expected to follow.

The project has been funded by Medway Council, the Homes and Communities Agency, the University of Kent and Sport England.
