Natural England calls for Lodge Hill moratorium

Wed 24 October 2012, 6:40 pm

A Medway site earmarked for the construction of a 5,000 home development should be treated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for planning purposes until better evidence on its conservation worth is available, a watchdog has said.

Natural England wants to delay an examination into the suitability of the Lodge Hill site, north of Chattenden, until up-to-date information on its nightingale population is available, Planning magazine reported.

The body said the evidence was expected next year.

A spokesman insisted Natural England committed to engaging fully with Medway Council to draw up plans for a “compensatory habitat” if development on the site went ahead.
