Independent school King’s Rochester has taken over the refurbishment and running of the Stirling Sports Centre in an innovative deal with Medway Council.
The centre will remain open for public use, but will receive some £500,000 from the school to upgrade its current facilities.
Olympian hockey star Julian Halls has been appointed director of sports development for the centre - which will now be known as King’s Rochester Sports Centre.
Howard Doe, the council’s portfolio holder for community services, said the partnership with King’s would give residents access to a greatly enhanced centre with extended opening hours.
“Providing first class facilities for everyone is an important part of Medway’s sporting legacy in the wake of the success of the London Olympics,” he said.
