Medway misses out on city status

Mon 19 March 2012, 11:57 am

Medway has missed out on city status following a competition to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jublilee.

Following the announcement, Rodney Chambers, leader of Medway Council said that the process of bidding had created national publicity which helped raise the area’s profile.

He thanked all those involved with the bid, and congratulated the successful bidders.

He said:  “Putting forward the case for Medway to become a city allowed us to advertise what we already know. This is a large, vibrant area, which is open for business.

“It is true to say that not only does Medway have a rich heritage, it also has a great future – its four universities, unrivalled transport links to the capital and continent and an increasingly more skilled workforce all vouch for that.

“The bid also shows that we have come such a long way since the 1980s when the naval dockyard in Chatham closed.”
