Princess Royal opens new Medway facility

Wed 3 August 2011, 12:46 pm

The Princess Royal has officially opened new sports facility Medway Park in Gillingham.

She unveiled a commemorative plaque to mark the transformation of the sports facility into a state-of-the-art regional centre of excellence.

Princess Anne, who competed at the 1976 Olympics and serves as President of the British Olympic Association, also watched the opening events of the European Modern Pentathlon Championships, a qualifying event for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Medway Park was formerly known as the Black Lion centre, before receiving an £11 million makeover.

The renovated venue now boasts a new 12-court multi-use sports hall, an eight-lane athletics track and a gym. It is set to be used as a pre-Games training camp by the Barbados, Senegal and Nepal Olympics squads.
